Sewing Drawings
Illustration project and blog.
Sewing Drawings is a blog where I draw pictures of things I’ve sewn.
I took a beginner sewing class in winter of 2018, and fell in love the first moment I sat at the machine. I began sewing my own clothes soon after, and started this blog in the summer of 2019 as a way to combine many of my creative interests in one place: sewing, illustration, web design, writing, and even books (I think of the blog as a kind of digital artist book).
I found that every garment I made carried some kind of story with it – who I was with when I found the fabric, what I was thinking about or working through while I sewed it, where I wore it when it was done. Those stories find their way implicitly into the drawings, and explicitly into the writing that accompanies each post.
The online sewing community is warm and vibrant, and this project has given me a way to connect with other people across the globe. When a stranger in Australia comments that one of my drawings makes them happy, that’s all the return on investment I am looking for.
My sister is my blog photographer, and getting together to take these photos in her backyard (by now we’ve taken them on both the hottest and coldest days of the year) is a treasured time, even though I don’t love having my photo taken. The more years of creative projects I have behind me, the more confirmation I get that one of the best feelings out there is collaborating with another person (or many other people) to create something that didn’t exist before.
